Electromagnetic Aircraft Launching System (EMALS)
Energy Delivery 120 MJ delivered in 2 seconds. That’s 120 MW instantaneously, well beyond the capability of expected ship board power. So we need to store 120 MJ over say 1 minute and then deliver that much over ~ 2 seconds. Three possibilities spring to mind, Flywheels, Super conducting Magnet Energy Storage systems, (SMES) and Ultra capacitors. Flywheels on a platform with pitch and roll are much more complex than those not subject to short term motion, and there are substantial issues in the Power Electronic interface to a SMES coil at these power levels. The recently available Ultra capacitors look very promising, and are continually improving. Those in the market place at present have a time constant ~ 2.5 seconds, at least making that of the right order, and VTB has some accurate ladder models, so in the first instance we will model Ultra capacitors. To give you an idea of scale 120 MJ of Ultra capacitors at currently available specifications would weigh ~ 10 tonnes, and occupy ~8.5 m3. EMALS Pages |
