Electromagnetic Aircraft Launching System (EMALS)
Simulation So we come to the real challenges, a spatially distributed mechanical - electrical system, where the coupling is via electromagnetic fields rather than simple 2 terminal ports. The whole electromechanical system is comprised of functionally independent units (one of the great advantages of the EMALS) which operate in a sequential fashion, with the completion of one operation of one section of the launcher initiating the operation of the next, with such things as the speed and acceleration at the end of the first being inputs for the second, and so on. Here is a real research challenge.
